Requesting 12M POIs Maps for Mio C230

Posted on February 8th, 2008 in mio c230 by amida168

The major complaint for Mio C230 is the number of POIs that comes with the system. Unlike the previous models, C230 only has 0.9 million POIs. Even though you can add custom POIs, the search speed suffers.

One reader has provided a link to a forum where you can request 12M POIs for Mio C230. At the time of the writing, the following states are available.

    Amida,

Have you seen the post by C230 (Ameridan) with the links to the Canadian and US maps version 2007.01? I believe these are the same 12M POI maps you’re referring to.

I downloaded the 8 parts of the archive and extracted them and found that these maps work just fine with my C230 using my existing stock North America license.db file. There is a license.db file included inside the archive but I didn’t need or use it.

The level of POI detail in these maps is worlds better than the stock C230 map set. Even in my little podunk town, there are tons of POI’s. It looks like the yellow-pages got imported into the map files.

You do have to have an SD-Card to hold some of the files, since the whole map set won’t fit on the internal storage. I ended up with almost half on the internal storage and the rest on the SD-Card. Works perfectly!

    Tim,

I have read Ameridan’s article about adding Canada maps. I just didn’t realize that he updated the article with the download of US maps.

Just got done updating my Illinois / Indiana maps and am impressed. NICE!!! Had to move a few Western states to the SD card (along with Canada) but it is nice to have the extra states. Now just waiting for Iowa and Wisconsin and I will be happy…

Anyone have the password for these rar files. I cannot get Iowa to open and it breaks the unzip. Thanks.

    Have you tried iwillhelptheworld ?

  6. amida168 said,

    Tim,

The files downloaded from Ameridan’s link has a license.db file. I don’t think it’s legal to distribute the license.db file.

  7. CD said,

    on February 13th, 2008 at 11:09 am

The license.db file itself will not allow you to see locked maps. The license.db file that comes with the Canada maps is the same that comes with the Mio c230. It is a North America license that allows you to see the 2007.1 maps.

  8. amida168 said,

    CD,

I am talking about the license.db file that comes with the 8-part download from the links provided by Ameridan. The reason for that license.db is for those people without a proper license.db file to use the maps. I think it’s OK to have people download the map files, but if you let people download the cracked(?) license.db file, it’s a different story.

I keep getting a fatal error for montana, any help?

  10. CD said,

    on February 14th, 2008 at 8:44 am

The Montana map (2007.1) floating around the web is corrupted. Either delete it entirely, or replace it with the smaller 2007.1 Motana that came with the c230.

  11. CD said,

    on February 14th, 2008 at 8:47 am

    Amida,

I understand. I was just saying that, even if you have a “cracked” license.db, you still won’t be able to see the maps. I just wanted people to know that adding the license.db that comes with the 8 part d/l will yield nothing.

How old are these maps? I downloaded the Florida maps, and my area has been under a lot of Construction. The included maps with the 230 are accurate including the new/major changes to get to the Palm Beach airport, the map listed above has the old road layout. This project has been going on for a few years and it includes new exits, roads to get to the airport.

I also noticed the PoI listed in my area are not current. I don’t expect the PoI to be accurate, the map and the PoI are using old data. There were businesses listed that have been gone for over five years.

The maps included with the GPS were dated 2007. Between the map inaccuracies and the PoI inaccuracies in the five miles around me it makes me wonder how old the maps listed above are and if they are any good.

    CD,

Got you. Thanks for your feedback on Montana map.

  14. amida168 said,

    on February 14th, 2008 at 9:58 am

    SFGPS,

These maps are dated 2007/01. However, I found them not so accurate in my area either. I used to have a Garmin back in 2006. Garmin’s maps are based on NavTeq while Mio’s maps are based on TeleAtlas. I am afraid to say that Garmin’s maps are more accurate than Mio’s maps even though Garmin’s maps are dated 2006.

  15. SFGPS said,

    on February 14th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

I like having the Police and Fire Departments listed and there were some other PoI I found useful in the maps listed above. The 320 standard maps include cemeteries. I know people find them interesting, I think people will use them for Genealogy, but I would think that cemeteries would be a PoI group they eliminate when cutting down on PoI. The police department might be one you could use in an unknown area.

  16. CD said,

If I am not mistaken, the number after the decimal corresponds to the month. Therefore, 2007.1 would be Jan. 2007. There are also maps that are 2007.7 and 2007.10.

I have all the maps. Here are my observations:

*The 2007.1 maps that came with the c230 are much smaller in size/POI than the full 2007.1 maps. This was, obviously, to allow all maps to fit, internally. If you want to go with the larger maps, you will either have to 1.) delete non-needed maps from the internal flash (forgoing having all of the 50 states) or 2.) Go with an external SD card.

*The 2007.7 maps are on par with the larger 2007.1 maps as far as POIs, but the roads are updated. As an example, the 2007.7 map for my state, Georgia, is slightly larger than the full 2007.1 map.

*The 2007.10 maps are the newest. However, while they may have the most accurate road data, the POI database is MUCH smaller, barely bigger than the anemic 2007.1 maps that come with the Mio c230.

For my money, providing you can spare the storage capacity, I use 2007.7. Also, I keep all maps on my SD card, except my home state. That way, if I swap SD cards (for additional movies, mp3s, etc.) I do not need to have my home state on every SD I may be using. If I am going on vacation, etc., I then add all applicable states to the internal flash, as well.

    CD,

Thanks for your detailed comparison. When you use the 2007.07 or 2007.10 maps, do you need to use a “modified” version of license.db?

  18. CD said,

    on February 16th, 2008 at 8:38 am

    That is correct.

  19. SFGPS said,

What does the “Data Source ©2007 Tele Atlas N.V.[070717]” mean?

I thought the 070717 was the date of the maps. If you look through the state maps that number varies on some maps.

  26. RotJ said,

The Virginia file reintroduces the DC area routing problem where it sends you on a 230 mile trip from VA to MD on what should be a 10 mile trip. This thread has the details, though I don’t think the patch will work for the C230.

  27. amida168 said,

    RotJ,

Thanks for letting us know about the potential problems. I also found that the North Carolina map crashes my MioMap a lot. After I reverted it to the original map, it is OK.

How do I add georgia to my SD card? Do I have to delete it from the mio?

  29. djdeito said,

    on February 26th, 2008 at 1:47 am

to add a map to a SD card first you need to create a folder in the SD card called MioMap and then create another folder inside MioMap named MAPS in other words it will be something like this MioMap/MAPS and now you can add any map to the MAPS folder in the sd card. you have to delete the map that’s inside the gps memory otherwise the map in the sd card won’t be read instead the device will read the one in the internal memory.

  30. mr billy said,

    on February 26th, 2008 at 7:51 am

What about POI? How do I add those to the memory card?

  31. mr billy said,

    on February 26th, 2008 at 8:05 am

Ok,I did that. I’ve got F:\MioMap\MAPS and I dropped USA_Georgia.fbl in there, then I went into the Mio C230 and deleted USA_Georgia.fbl from there but now I don’t get anything at all for Georgia.

Is it possible to get maps for other countries too?

  34. DJDEITO said,

    on February 26th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

if you are using a SD card make sure that no other folders are in it except the two folders i mentioned before. if you do this correctly, upon inserting the sd card, the gps will restart itself. before you do all this i suggest that you delete the map first from the gps and then add the new map to the sd card.

  35. mr billy said,

    on February 26th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I had done that but for some reason it wasn’t reading the card. Now it reads it just fine. Is there a way to add other countries?

  36. DJDEITO said,

    on February 26th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

    Mr. Billy

not that im aware of, unless you buy additional countries from the mio website.

  37. mr billy said,

You have to buy maps or can I stick them on the SD card?

  38. CD said,

There are lots of maps for other countries. Most are in that country’s native language, though. I did see an Isreal in english however. Check Google.

  39. amida168 said,

You can have Canada maps legally. For other countries, you have to buy them. Please see this post about adding Canada maps and other articles about Mio C230.

BTW, make sure your SD card is a high speed one. Otherwise, you might have problems getting C230 to recognize it.

Does anyone know if the links above are to the 2007.7 maps or the 2007.1 maps? I’m about to buy an SD card and will be dropping in my home state, but I want it to have the 2007.7 maps. Additionally, I heard the you needed a modified license.db file to use the 2007.1 maps. Anyone know here I can get that?

Finally, is there anyway to delete the maps/adding license.db on the C230 without connecting it to the PC (because I have no cable).

Thanks for the help guys. Appreciate it.

  42. amida168 said,

    on February 29th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    SEALBoy,

Those maps are 2007.01 maps. Depending upon your current MioMap version, you might be able to use the 2007.07 maps without a cracked license.db and MioMap.exe. If 2007.07 maps are what you are looking for, you have to look elsewhere. Because it’s illegal to use those maps for most of us.

It’s possible to delete the maps/adding license.db on the C230 without a cable. You need to write a script to achieve that. Otherwise, wait until I publish my SD card based unlock. That way, you can unlock your C230 without even connecting it to the computer. You then can use the file manager on the unlock C230 to copy/delete files.

  43. SEALBoy said,

    on February 29th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Ok man thanks a lot! I’ll look into getting a hold of the 2007.7 maps myself. One last thing: if I add the new maps for my state on an SD card will I have to delete the one on the onboard memory?

  44. mr billy said,

    on March 1st, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Is there a way to DL all of them at once? I’ve got a nice big SD card I can store them all on.

  45. amida168 said,

    on March 3rd, 2008 at 5:37 pm

    SEALBoy,

Yes, you have to delete the original map from the internal memory after you back it up first.

I am pretty sure you can buy the maps. I think it all depends on the licenses you have available. There may be sources on the net that offer illegal maps and cracked licenses, but I doubt you will find any links on any of these sites.

    New-bee,

The same thing happened to me. The part2.rar file had a decent size, but didn’t unrar to anything.

Have you tried to just use Part 1 without appending Part 2? Do you know what’s missing if you do this?

    Thanks.

  58. hdfan said,

    on March 17th, 2008 at 11:25 am

FYI, I’m trying just Part I of CA rar file. So far, works fine. Have no idea what’s missing by not using Part II (hopefully I don’t find out the hard way!). Tried a route from San Jose to SoCal, and it seemed to be able to do that just fine, implying that these regions are within the Part I map. Many more POI’s, but some still not there (Walgreens, RiteAid, for example) - so overall still a great upgrade. Don’t know whether these missing POI’s are in Part II or not - seem fairly basic, so I wouldn’t expected them to be in a complete POI db.

Will update as I try it out more. If anyone has any more info on what Part II is or how to unrar the posted file, please comment.

  59. amida168 said,

    on March 17th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

    New-bee and Hdfan,

You don’t miss anything. My understanding is that when you extract part i, it actually combines part i and part ii. If you don’t trust me, try moving part ii to a different folder and see if you can extract part i alone.

    New-bee,

I paid over $200.00 for my C230. The best price you can find these days is around $130 ~ $140. Amazon usually has better price than most of other sites. Also, if you buy from Amazon, you are actually supporting our site. :-)

I didn’t notice any delay after installing the 12M POIs maps.

thanks you guys. You guys are really helpful, and your input are really great.

I found it on Radio Shack for $129.99 on sale. Will get it soon.

One more thing, can you still add custom POI after adding 12M POI? Would there be a delay after that?

Just to recap, once I got the C230, I will need to

    - unlock it with release 4 (SD card way)

    - add my state 12M POI

    - add custom POI if needed

Any other hack suggestion that i should have.

    thanks

    new-bee,

i had added custom POI’s before i added the revised CA map. they’re still there and active. how the unit would handle redundant entries (e.g. if you added starbucks as custom POI and those were also in the 12M POI file), i’m not really sure though.

no delay as long as you follow the instructions under adding custom POI’s (another thread on this site). somewhere in the discussion thread someone has posted instructions on how to compact the data files so there’s no delay. if you just download a db from a site where it’s not compacted, i was having problems with delays.

don’t forget to add the canada maps too.

i also did the data.zip tweaks (fast fly over, toggling between map and cockpit mode, easy mode, etc), which i found to also be great. i didn’t do the hack using sd card, so i honestly don’t know whether the data.zip tweaks are incorporated into that already.

    Hdfan,

Yes, the release 4 using SD card has incorporated all the tweaks into the DATA.ZIP. Thanks for helping out.

I downloaded both the 12M POI and the 3M POI maps of Canada and neither are recognized by my MIO c230, regardless of whether they are on the SD card or the main memory. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks.

    Hi Amida168 and Hdfan,

thank you for your advice. I got the unit from Radio Shack, on sale for $140 (including tax), add the 12M POI, and unlock it with a SD card. Bang, it is incredible. Nothing problem encountered.

    Just one note

    - I need to replace the DATA.zip, even with the release 4, to have the tweaks. Release 4 seems to have the original DATA.zip

    - Now I am dealing with the time zone difference. I read somewhere and updated with a timezones.ini for both the unit, and inside the SD card. But now, there is one hour different between the GPS, and the CE window (GPS is 1 hour faster). But it reports the correct arrival time in the GPS mode. Any clue?

    thanks

For Bayharbor, and folks who want the 12M and the original POI.

I download the 12M POI maps of Canada and 5 US states and put them on a folder named MioMap/MAPS on the SD card ( H drive when my c230 is connected to PC ). Canada comes straignt up, I was on Quebec City in no time ( virtual time ).

I also sitched to the 12M POI US states, by changing the extension of those same file in G:/MioMap/MioMap/MAPS from fbl to off. The c230 look into the default MAPS folder for all the fbl files, before it look at the SD card. Too many POI can make looking place like walmart a handful. So changing file extension only, let me keep my original in place, and swap the 12M POI at will.

Happy Trail, and see you northbound.

Note: is there a tool to let us delete some of POI in the 12M maps ?

    help,
my c230 reads the fbl map files I unzipped and downloaded but not the rar files. Any thoughts ? Is there a key or somethimg I missed ?

    eyes4u,
You need to use application like ExtractNow to extract the fbl file(s) from the .rar file.

I have a c230 I bought last week and was trying to add in these POI, it gives me a message that “some of the map files are outdated - see mio-tech.com.”
I have them in the folder MAPS on the Storage card. I have MioMap3.3 Aug8 2007, with the 070717 maps. Any ideas?

    jfg69,

The folder should be MioMap\MAPS on the storage card.

Thats where they are, I’m going to try a couple of things tho, I have been doing this under WINE on Linux. I have a sneaking suspicion I need to go boot into XP…

Also don’t forget to make a backup of the original maps your are replacing and delete them from the internal flash drive.

I have loaded the 12M POI. I live in Texas and the basic like Target, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. didn’t show up. Do I have to add those separately? Where do I get those POI and how do I load them? Thanks in advance.

  83. amida168 said,

    Taberd,

Target and Home Depot should be included. Did you make a copy of the original map and delete it from the unit first? You can also add customary POIs. I have a post about it. However, the search POI function is very slow after you add customary POIs.

    Amida,

Thanks. I did find Target and Home Depot. Now, what about Starbucks, they are not listed. How do I get and download the locations.

Has the map content of the 12M POI changed? Route using original FL map (2007.01 070718) from FL to NY uses I95 all the way whereas the 12M FL map refuses to use I95 through the Jacksonville area and reroutes adding about another 100 miles to the trip. No way to use I95 through Jacksonville. Any ideas?

Is there a way to get banks and ATM’s to show on the maps or POI?

Amida168, I used your version 2 unlock on my C230 and it was working great until I screwed something up. I want to try and get my C230 back to factory original everything, and then try the unlock again. Right now, my unit is crashing all the time. Any ideas on how I can fully remove the unlock and start over??
