Remote Desktop Connection Crashes a Windows XP Computer

Another day, another strange problem. Thankfully, it did not take me a long time to figure it out. We have a Dell Precision T3400 workstation. Whenever we tried to connect to it using Remote Desktop, it freezes and the only way to get it back is to reset it.

I checked the logs and the only thing related to the problem is a log entry about TermService.

Before doing more diagnostics, I decided to do the regular maintenance first. I ran Windows Update and found that there is a newer version of the graphic card driver. BTW, this computer has a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570. After the graphic card driver was updated, I was able to use remote desktop client to connect to it again.

This case reminded me about a similar case. A computer I were working on got a BSOD after I disconnected the remote desktop session. The BSOD also indicated the offending component is part of the ATI graphic driver. So, if you have a problem with remote desktop connection, you might want to update the graphic card driver first.

  1. Thank you!!! I have a Dell T3500 that one of my user just got and I had the exact same problem. New video drivers fixed the issue. The Dell drivers caused RDC to crash but the nvidia drivers worked fine. Thanks!!!!

  2. Good fix! I had a Dell T3400 with nVidia Quadro NVS 290 video drivers and windows XP which was freezing as soon as I connected from a Vista machine. I would have to do a cold reboot on the T3400. Updating the drivers from the nVidia site did the trick!

  3. Thank you sooo much guys for this fix. I have been struggling for several days till I finally hit this page and this was the ‘real’ solution .. We had a Precision 5400 with a NVidia Quadro 290 and after re-installing the updated driver from the NVidia web site I was able to remote desktop … Great fix … and Thanks for the posting

  4. Dude you rock! I was pissed at M$oft for pushing an update that broke my ability to RDP in from work. You’re a lifesaver!

  5. Many thanks!!!!!
    It really fixed the issue.
But I am not sure what caused the problem as I didn’t do any upgrade or installed anything new in my machine.
