Vista Elevated Command Prompt

When you first use Vista’s command prompt as an administrator, you might be surprised to know that you don’t get any admin priviledges. On Vista, you’ll need to elevate the command prompt in order to do admin functions. Here is how you get an elevated command prompt.

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. In the Search box, type in Command Prompt. Command Prompt will show up in the search results.
  3. Right click on Command Prompt icon and select Run as administrator.
  4. Enter the admin credential and you are ready to go.

If you are like me who uses command prompt a lot, you might want to pin the command prompt or add it to the Quick Launch.

  1. Neelambaram,

You can click on the top left corner of the command prompt and select properties. Click on Layout tab. Adjust the Width of Window Size to fit the command prompt window to your screen.

  3. Hi there,

I have successfully reached to Command Prompt… But it seems that I am stuck at that point only. I clicked on the its icon on the top left hand side of the command prompt pop-up but I do not see any where that I can ask for running as administrator… Help me out you guys…

  4. Hi Amida168,

I’ve already right click the icon but still didn’t get the “Run as Administrator” things…

  5. If you open up the properties in the advanced section of the short cut tab there’s an option to run as administrator every time you open the program. This is much easier if you’re doing a lot of things that require ‘elevated’ permissions.
