How to Update SpeedCam File for MioMap 3.3

It’s been a while for me to write something about Mio C230. Some of you might notice the recent posts about iPhone. I have not forgotten about my little Mio C230 yet. It’s just that I don’t have much time to cover both topics.

Anyway, remember that I wrote a post about updating the speedcam file for Mio C230. The file was compiled back in 2007 and it has not been updated since then. I thought it’s time to get an updated file. This time, I’ll tell you a way to generate the file using free download from a web site. As long as the site keeps updating the file, the data should be accurate.

  1. Visit this site. Click on the Download button to download the file.
  2. Click on iGo 8 Text Format on the next screen. Name the file speedcam.txt .
  3. Connect your Mio GPS to the computer using a USB cable. The device shows up as a drive (Mio Device).
  4. Browse to the folder MioMap/MioMap/POI/SPEEDCAM on the Mio Device. If you have previous file in the folder, make a backup and then either delete it or rename it.
  5. Copy speedcam.txt to this location.
  6. Disconnect the GPS. (You might want to do safely remove the mass storage device before you disconnect it.)

The next time you run MioMap, you can see the speedcams on your map.

Notes:

  1. If you have previously added some customary speedcams, the info is lost if you follow this guide to update the file.
  2. The downloaded file includes both red light cameras and speed traps.

  1. A couple of comments/questions:

    1) The old speedcam file was in some kind of binary format and was named speedcam.spud. Are you sure that a simple text file like this download works? Is there any way to see one of these speedcam entries on the Mio screen without having to drive to the location?

    2) Assuming that the text file does indeed work properly, I noticed that site has another download for Speed Traps here: http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_states/safety/Speed_Trap.html

That download is also supposed to contain both the red-light cameras and speed cameras but the file contains 3356 entries versus 2662 entries in the file you suggested. Looks like it might be a bit more comprehensive.

    3) If this really works, nice find!

  2. Tim,

    1) I have tested this on my C230 and it really works. When you start MioMap, the program detects the text file and generates the required binary files. You don’t have to drive to the locations to see the cameras on your device. I have several cameras near my house, I can see them on the gps.

    2) The file you suggested is indeed bigger. If you read the text on the red light camera page, it also says the file includes both red light and speed cameras. I don’t know the real difference between the two files. I guess it doesn’t hurt to put the bigger Speed Trap file on the C230. I have updated the post to use the Speed Trap file instead.

  3. I tested with the text file and and indeed a new file with extension SPDB is created. Not sure how to test it yet.

Can someone tell me why when I start MioMap, and go to Settings/General, sometimes I see the button to enable/disable the speedcams, but most of the times it’s missing?

  4. I have heard about this issue from some of my readers. I think it’s related to the more recent Mio C230. If you used a different skin (DATA.ZIP), you might be able to see the button all the time.
