Right after I published the release 3.1, MoonBear contacted me and asked about some system files for the default Mio C230. He helped me to figure out a SD card based unlock procedure. I have since changed my unlock procedure to accommodate this.
What are the advantages using a SD card? Firstly, the unlock is easier when you use a SD card. A lot of people got confused about changing the folder name of the default location of MioMap. With the SD card approach, you don’t have to do that any more. Secondly, as I put more applications in the unlock package, there is not enough space in the internal flash drive. I now put everything on a SD card, this is not an issue any more. Thirdly, with earlier releases we have to hard reset the unit every time we disconnect it from the computer. Now that I use the SD unlock, the unit behaves better. Most of the time, I don’t have to do a hard reset. About 1 out of 5 times, I still need to hard reset the unit, so the problem is not completely fixed. Since I can just work on the SD card, I rarely need to connect C230 directly to computer, so this is not a big deal any more. Lastly, the modification of the internal flash of the unit is minimal. It’s also very easy to revert the unit back to the factory state.
If you already have a high speed SD card, you are fine. Otherwise, the first thing you need to do is to buy a nice SD card. Note that you cannot just use an age-old SD card from several years ago. Chances are your Mio cannot recognize it. This is the card I am currently using. 1 GB is sufficient for me. If you like to have a lot of MP3s and movies, consider a card with bigger capability(2 GB , 4 GB ).
Here are what’s new about this release.
- SD based unlock.
- 3 desktops.
- MioMap skin chooser(switcher).
- Expanded game section.
BEFORE YOU FOLLOW THE PROCEDURES TO MODIFY YOUR MIO C230. YOU KNOW THAT YOU MIGHT RENDER YOUR C230 UNUSABLE AND YOU MIGHT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISKS. THE FOLLOWING STEPS HAVE BEEN TESTED ON US MODEL OF MIO C230 ONLY. THEY ARE NOT MEANT FOR MIO C230 PURCHASED IN OTHER COUNTRIES.
Background
Before you begin, make sure you read the post entirely and you have no questions about each step. A little background might help you understand what you are doing. There is a back door for MioMap to run external application. This is different for different models of Mio GPS. For Mio C230, this back door is an application called autorun_ABC.exe (or GOCE.exe) on the storage card. What we are going to do is to have our unlock package on a storage card and trick the MioMap to run our unlock script. Note that with this approach, you don’t need to change the default MioMap directory. If you have changed the default MioMap directory, you’ll have to change it back before you try this unlock. If you have a USB cable, connect the unit to a computer and backup everything on the unit before you go on.
Step by Step Instructions
- Download the zip file from here.
- Unzip the file and copy everything to a SD card. Note that if you already have a Skins or Routes directory, just copy the content of Skins or Routes directories to your existing Skins or Routes directories. Here is a screenshot of the folders and files on the storage card’s root directory.
- Turn off Mio C230 using the switch on the back. Insert the SD card into the unit.
- Turn on Mio C230 using the switch on the back. A dialog pops up telling you the unlock is done and begging for donation. 🙂 Click on OK to continue.
- (Optional) If you still have the default MioMap user interface(skin), you need to change it so that you can exit MioMap. I have included a modified skin in the Skins directory.
- Click on Routes on the desktop.
- Select MioMap Skin Choices and click on OK.
- Select ComputerBits and click on OK.
- A new skin is being copied, this process can take up to 30 secs or more.
Mini Manual
There are 3 desktops included in this package. You can use the left and right arrows on the lower right corner to switch between the desktops. The top row and bottom row are the same for each desktop. After unlocking, notice there is a small icon “ab” in the top left corner. If you tap on it, it opens up an on-screen keyboard. You need a stylus to us it. Make sure the cursor is in the input field of the window when you use it. Tap it again to close the on-screen keyboard. Right next to ab icon, there are 3 small icons. They are:
- Restart: Restart the unit.
- Landscape: Return the screen to landscape mode. This is useful when the screen is rotated 90 degrees by accident.
- Volume: Change the volume. The default volume is set to maximum. You can use this to change volume before playing a game with sound like Tetris.
The bottom row from left to right:
- GPS: Invokes MioMap.
- Media: Invokes TCPMP. This is a versatile media player. It plays various video formats and MP3. It can also be used to view photos. I added the plugin to play FLV video downloaded from YouTube or other flash video sites. Plugins for playing Podcast video are also included.
- FileMan CE: Invokes FileMan CE, a file manager for CE devices. You can use it to launch other programs not on the desktop or manage files.
Main Desktop
- Paint: Invokes PocketPaint. This is a simple paint program.
- Calculator: Invokes MyCalculator. To exit out MyCalculator, tap About and then the “X” in the about screen.
- Photos: Invokes GQe. You can use it to view photos on the storage card.
- Notes: Invokes NotePad, a notepad program for creating/viewing text files.
- Routes: Route Management and MioMap Skin Chooser(Switcher). See the Note section for instruction.
- uBook: uBook reader. It can open HTML, TXT, RTF, PDB and PRC (not secure) ebook files. A free Webster dictionary is included. I don’t know if anyone is interested in reading a dictionary, but it’s there.
Games Desktop
In this desktop, there are a lot of new games. Most of the games are from XFlib. If you like the games, please consider a donation to their site. You can download a lot more games from the site. A lot of games run in portrait mode. Ameridan has come up with a way using scripts to rotate the screen automatically. I have borrowed the scripts to run these games.
- Lights On: Invokes LightsON. The goal of the game is to turn all lights on.
- Free Cell: Invokes FreeCell, a poker game.
- Sudoku: A Sudoku game from XFlib.
- Caisses: A Sukoban clone game from XFlib.
- HexaVirus: My personal favorite from XFlib. Your goal is to active every virus in 30 moves or less.
- Aquella: A JezzBall-like game from XFlib.
- BallBreaker: An interesting game from XFlib to test your reflexes. All the balls are shooting at your cursor. Try to lure the balls to hit the block(s) and break them.
- Pipes: A classic pipes game from XFlib.
- Tetris: A classic Tetris game. Click on the block to rotate it. Click on the left or right side of the window to move the block.
- Shift: Another game from XFlib. Click on the border of the screen to move the blocks that can move in the direction. When 3 or more of the same block form, they disappear.
Utilities Desktop
- RegEdit: Registry editor for your Mio C230.
- iTaskMgr: Shows you CPU, Process and Task(Application) info. You can use this to terminal a process or switch to an application.
- Move: Utility to move windows around.
- DPMS: Turn your screen off.
- Resinfo: Invokes Resinfo. It shows you some resources informations for your device. Kinda like task manager in Windows. You can use it to terminate applications or processes.
- Restart: Restarts Mio C230. Use this when an application crashes or after you load new files to the SD card.
- Rotate: Rotates the screen counter-clockwise by 90 degrees.
- Snapshot: Invokes CapScrUtil. A screen capture utility. Remember to store the image to either Storage Card or My Flash Disk for easy access to the screenshots.
- Settings: Invokes MioUtility, a control panel like application for adjusting backlight, volume, screen, power, date/time and language.
Note
- If you want to use your own background image, just create a 320×240 bitmap file. Put them in the Scriptdesktop directory. Edit the ini files in the directory to use the bitmap file you created. main.ini is for Main desktop, gmaes.ini is for Games desktop and utilities.ini is for Utilities desktop. Change the variable BackgroudBitmap to point to the new file.
- If you want to change or add the icons(shortcuts) on the desktop, you can do so by editing the files in note #1. An icon entry is like this.

- When you have the program and icon(64×64) ready, copy the program to Script directory and copy the icon to Scriptdesktopicons directory and modify the variable Command, IconNormal and IconPushed. Note that you have to use absolute path for Command, but use relative path for IconNormal and IconPushed. If you follow this rule, you can use the included SystemInformation32.exe in that directory to test the desktops on your computer. This tool is very useful for those who like to change the desktops frequently. I have commented out some of the ICONXPBUTTON sections on the ini files. If you want to use them, remove the # signs in front of the lines.
- If for whatever reason, you cannot exit a certain application, you can use Resinfo to terminate the application. Tap the “ab” icon on the upper left corner. Tap “Ctl” and then “Esc” on the on-screen keyboard, this brings up taskbar. Once taskbar appears, tap “Programs” and then “Resinfo”. Use “Tasks” tab of Resinfo to terminate the application (task). You might want to soft reset (restart) the unit. Sometimes, the taskbar is on top when you run MioMap or other applications. It’s very annoying. You can disable the behavior by click on Start -> Settings -> Taskbar and Start Menu… and uncheck Always on top.
- Now that we have everything on the SD card, you don’t need to connect the unit to the computer any more. You can just take out the SD card and work on the SD card. When you are done working on the SD card. Insert the SD card back into the unit. If your unit did see the new files you added to the SD card, restart the unit by using the restart icon on the desktop. If you have Map files on your SD card, you might notice that the system soft reboots when you insert the card into the unit when it’s on. This is normal.
- If you still like to connect your unit to the computer, sometimes the unit freezes up. You will need to hard reset the machine using the switch on the back.
- Route management lets you Save/Load/Delete/Rename routes. The default location for routes is at Routes on the storage card. If you have saved your routes in other location, you can move them to here. To save a route, start MioMap. Plan a route as you wish. You might want to disable off-route automatic recalculation(Home -> Settings -> General -> Off-route recalculation) when you plan a route. When you are done planning, exit MioMap. Then click on Routes icon to run the route management program and click on “Save current Route” to save it. To load a route, click on Routes icon. Then click on “Load a saved Route”. Pick the route you want and click on OK. The MioMap starts up automatically with the route your picked.One added feature of this release is MioMap Skin Chooser (Switcher) by Mike FFI. If you have found a skin you want to use. Just create a subdirectory under Skins on the storage card. Copy the DATA.ZIP to the subdirectory. Please see this post about MioMap skins. Note that whenever you load a new skin, it takes a bit of time for the copy process to finish.
- The use of unlicensed maps is illegal. Please don’t ask where can you get maps not licensed for your device or how can you get MioMap to recognize the unlicensed maps. Any question regarding unlicensed maps will either be deleted or ignored.
Backing Off
If you don’t like it the way it is, you want to undo everything. It’s very easy to revert back to the factory state, just hard reset the unit using the switch on the back and copy the backup DATA.ZIP back to the unit if you wish.
If your Mio C230 is not working at all even after you perform the aforementioned steps, you can use the DVD that came with your unit to restore it.

i have not updatred for ages becaus I have my own hacks and my own way of unlocking and using this
I dont like the SD card methoid I rather have everything inside the mio and i have space enpough 85 mb free in the mio
Now i have a EU version c230 and it works flawless
I run the version 3.1 unlock modified and moved all the new games i like and appz from the latest release manually in the folder gtames or appz and create new entries in the games.ini and main.ini to show the appz on desktop…
This version as well as the last version will WORK ON YOUR EU C230
The only Issue after i unlocked using version 3.1 you do have to manully do this :

I tried it seems to crash to much from SD and I like to be able to use the sd ..move mp3 and video files on the fly on the sd

Yes, the SD card has to stay in the slot when you use it. Your Canada unit should have the proper license.db file for US maps. You can try to use the maps from my post “Requesting 12M POIs Maps for Mio C230”. If you have followed the last step of my unlocking guide, you should see an Exit door at the main screen.

That is the hard part. A lot of programs written for PocketPC or Windows CE are not compatible. I would suggest you install that program on a different device and copy the program folder from that device to Mio C230’s SD card. You then can try to copy aygshell.dll and other dlls from script folder to your aviation program folder. You then can try to invoke your program using FileMan CE.

Thanks for your input. When I first tried out SD based unlocking, I used an old SD card and it’s very unstable. However, after I switched to a faster and newer card, it’s just as stable as the original unlock.
BTW, does the GOCE.exe trick also work on your EU C230?
I think there is a merit that running from SD card, is less stable than running from the flash memory. The SD card memory is designed with expectation to have error, and it depends on error correction to fix the errors on the fly, and that is good for data file, not that great for excecutables. My unlocked C230 works fine with an old 256MB SD card, but much less stable with a high speed 2GB SD card.
I need about 5 to 6 U.S. states and Candana most of the time, So I was think getting rid of those states that I don’t use and unlocked it with C230 internal flash disk.
The zip file is about 14.5MB. If the Mio C230 release 4 is placed on the C230 flash, and has a hardware restart, will the hack work from the C230 internal Flash Disk ?

The package was designed with SD card in mind. It’s not going to work if you put it in the internal flash.

I have a few questions:
1. How to disable or move the ab icon to the bottom, so it won’t be on top on the [File] command ?
2. How to create 64×64 32bit icon from BMP file with program name ? The icon tool I found only put out 24 bit color.
3. Can the Desktop or the background changed every 3 seconds, so it work like a slide show ? Or can the picture viewer started a slide show with folder name in command line ?
4. Can Icon be totally hidden, without the “No Icon” text ?
5. Can we start the media player with the file name in the command line ?
I was having a blast tweeking the MIO c230.

You are welcome. There are a lot of things to try after you get your C230 unlocked. If you get other programs to work with C230, please come back tell us.
Here are answers to your question.
1. You can disable the keyboard (ab icon) by editing the script.mscr file in the Script directory. Comment the line that says
Run(“\Storage Card\Script\keyb.exe”)
by putting a # in front of it
2. I used IcoFx and sometimes GIMP to create the icons.
3. Don’t know.
4. Please see Note #2 about the format for icons. If you set the ScaleAlpha to 0, the icon is hidden.
5. You have to first open up the media player and go to Options -> Settings. Click on Select Page and select File Association. Click on OK after you are done. You have to do this every time you hard resetting the machine.
I unlocked my mio c230 when i put power to it i get computer to device screen what happened

If the power is from the computer’s USB cable, that’s normal. Your device is treated as flash drives when you connect it to the computer. If you just want to charge it using your computer, use the orange button on the top to turn your device off first before you connect it to the computer.

I’ve been nothing but impressed by my MIO and your V4 Unlock and software…
Now I want to take my knowledge to the next level, so if you don’t mind a few quick questions;
1 – Can you direct me to a good site on modifying .cabs or .exe so they can be installed in their final directory format so I can install it on the MIO?
2 – Is there a particular WinCE emulator I should use? (I found Microsoft’s Emulator at link)
3 – Is there anything I can look at (in a program) that will help to determine if the program can be run on the MIO?
4 – Is there anything I can do to “fool” the MIO or the program into running? Does Mortscript do this?
5 – Do you have any favorite sites that helped you to learn the things I’m asking about that you could share with us?

I did a few tests on my c230, about adding another functions to it as a Digital picture frame.
I shrunk the left64.ico and right64.co to 32×32. I also generated a handful of photos as 320×240 bmp. I generated a photoxx.ini for each BMP file, and link the first one to the buttom. The 32×32 icons let me scroll thru the pictures, and they are small enough not to cause distraction. It was very nice. I found out there are many nice 320×240 bmp wallpaper out there, because of ipod.
I then set the icon’s alpha to zero, and hide the left and right button, but they show up any way, when they are pressed. My next trial will be making two 100×100 transparent buttons, and replace the two left and right 32×32 buttons. That will make the buttons easy to use, and hidden.

Looks like you are having fun with tweaking your C230. It’s a great idea about turning it into a photo frame.
There are two ScaleAlpha, one before IconNormal and one before IconPushed. You need to set both ScaleAlpha to zero.
I was looking arounf for a slide show application for c230, and found out CE programs come in three ways.
1. A exe file that can be run by just adding to C230, and link to a button.
2. A cab file that need to be installed. Do I just turn on the task bar, and activate them ? I don’t really has too much luck turn on the task bar, is taskbar related to keyb.exe ?
3. An install exe file, and have to run thru active sync. My other GPS PND get reconginsed by active sync, but not my C230! I read there is a way to work with active sync. I am still looking…
Note : I found few simple games exe that can just load and run : Mindsweeper.exe and Reversi.exe.
I downloaded the Canada maps o SD for my unit but it does not come up. I think I followed all th steps that you outlined above on addin the maps. Please help. I am going to Canada later this morning.

Where did you put the maps? You should put the maps in MioMap\MAPS on the SD card. Make sure you type in the directory name correctly.
Still working on MioC230R4 ….
1. Used two large transparent buttons for left and right, and hook up 12 pictures in a ring with ini file. I made the top left restart button to main.ini to getout oif this manual slide show.
2. Convert 100 of photo into a slide show with transistion and music with application called MemoryOnTV, then use TMPGenc to re-encode to “video.mpg” in 320×240 to save space. select File Association of mpg to the media player. Link a button to this “video.mpg”. When the button is pushed. The Slide show video starts running after just one tab on the scrren. THANK YOU for the TIP.
3. Found an application named “CABinst”, and try to installed CAB files. It does run, and it think it did “Installed the program in the CAB file to Default location”. But nothing happened.
4. Comments : My other GPS with NavTeq maps and routes much better than TeleAtlas, but this C230 has all the FUN FACTORS.
How do I go back and partition the folder? Do I delete and re download the maps? Also, I downloaded the unlock zip file but nothing happened here too. Maybe because I am using my MIO as the portal for the SD card, it doesnot regognize the infos once I do a reset. Pls help.
I have the C320, not the 230, does it work the same?

You can modify the utilities.ini in the Script/desktop folder. Find the line
Command = \Windows\MioUtility.exe

I’m from indonesia, is there anyone who has tried to do these unlocking things in other versions of mio c230 aside of US version? The mio c230 in indonesia didn’t use mio maps, though, they use teleatlas’. Will that be a problem in unlocking the device using these steps above? Thanx for any comment…

People have tried my unlock on EU Mio C230 with success. I don’t know how different is the Indonesia’s model. It doesn’t hurt trying. This unlock works on SD card, so there is minimum changes to the internal flash drive. Let us know what you find out. BTW, MioMap is the name of the navigation software. US Mio C230 also uses maps provided by TeleAtlas.
Well, I’m still planning on buying c230, and after reading what you have done here, i’m really interested in c230.
Just in case, for the worst case, the unlock didn’t work, what might happen to the c230? Is using a SD card means that i can always restore my c230 to the default factory setting by removing the SD card? How about the updating of the maps? Can i still update the maps on the authorized dealers? Thanx, and i’m sorry if be a little bit of trouble to you all… =)

Usually you can revert your unit back to the factory state by hard resetting it. C230 also comes with a recovery DVD, so you can use it to recover your unit, if hard resetting is not working.
I don’t know about Map updates. Mio Tech USA is not very good at updating the maps. I am not worried about the updates.
I am trying to unlock my C230 with release 4. I am having problems and my computer experience in this area is limited. Is this blog the appropriate place to describe the problem and request help?

I downloaded the MioC230R4.zip file.
Then unzipped the file into “My Documents”
I can copy, cut, or move these files to a Dane-Elec memory stick with no problems.
I cannot copy, cut, move or download any of the files to a new Kingston SD/2GB card. I get Error: The media is write protected. Must unprotect.
I am using the card through my Cannon printer card slot as removable disc “G”
If additional info would help please let know. Any help would be appreciated. I am feeling like a “Big IDIOT” right now. Thanks

First, make sure the locking tab on your SD card is not locked. If you are sure your SD card is not locked, you might need to format your SD card. Do not forget to back up the files one the SD card first.
Just got a C230 with v 3.3 and tried the unlock Release 4. Everything seems to work as described except the ROUTE MANAGEMENT, which is the feature I’m most interested in. After planning a route (with automatic rerouting off), I use the exit door to get to the ROUTE Management application, but when I try to SAVE ROUTE, it tells me route.dat does not exist. With file Manager I cannot find a route.dat anywhere on either the Storage card or the Device. I don’t see any comments related to this. Apparently this application worked well in previous unlock versions. Am I missing something?

Hi , i am totally new to this but downloaded & installed release 4 & it works awesome. heres where you’ll see i know nothing about this stuff….I looked in “getting programs for mio c230” and saw there were several tabbed web browsers available. do any of them work? which one works best with c230? can you surf the net with them? & do they get connection from sattalite? So i guess my general question is , if they do work , which is best ? im a dummy , so ill need step by step instructions if anyone can help. Hats off to the author of all this work, great work!!!!

If you could connect your Mio C230 to the computer, look for a file SYS.TXT in the MioMap\MioMap. Use a text editor to open it. Make sure there is a line for autosave.

This should be created automatically by the unlocking script, but sometimes it might not get created.
If this still doesn’t work, try using a different skin which you can download from my site.

Even though there are web browsers for PocketPC and Windows CE devices, Mio C230 can only use them to view static pages on the device. There is no way for it to connect to the Internet.

Thank you for your help. I have been experimenting since 4:00 a.m. I find that the lock/unlock has no effect on the writer-protect of my SD card(s). I did format the card. from FAT to FAT32 added the volume 2GB and kept the Quick Format blank. I also found that if I used the Mio as the card reader it went faster and with less problems than using my Cannon printer card slot. Now for a few more questions.
The AB icon seems not to be as reactive as the other icons. Is there anyway to improve this?
What is the quickest way to close the key board?
Will a Kingston 4GB SDHC card work in the Mio and should this be considered if I plan to store a lot of music and video/TV in the C230? Thanks Again

Regarding the AB icon, if you can find other versions of it, the performance might improve. It’s called keyb.exe in my distro, the official name is MioTool.
Mio C230’s SD slot supports SDHC card. I think Kingston 4GB would work, but don’t take my word for it. I have only tried 1GB and 2GB cards.
amida168: Thanks for the hint on the ROUTE MANAGEMENT. It turns out that the autosave=1 was in there as the last entry for the section, but a an empty line (carriage return) separated it from the other entries. I deleted the empty space and added an empty space between autosave=1 and the beginning of the next section. I saved the revised sys.txt file in the miomap directory, then reset the device and it worked as described. THANKS! I had not touched that file so somehow it did not save as written.
